Do you know what to do in an evacuation scenario?

During an evacuation, you are required to abandon your accommodation. Possible scenarios include earthquakes, great fires, or other disasters. One scenario gives you the time to pack your bags, the other does not. What is your standard plan of action? And what will you take with you?

You must abandon your accommodation immediately, what do you do?

  • Only take what is essential, like medication.
  • Lock the building.
  • Help others: family members, neighbours, and pets.

You have a few minutes, what do you take with you?

  • Medication
  • Cash
  • Passport, ID, or drivers’ license
  • Insurance papers
  • Mobile phone, laptop, tablet, and their corresponding chargers.
  • Bottles of water

Add to this basic list your personal products. That could be clothing, medication for your pets, food for your baby, etcetera. If you have extra time, shut off the supply water, gas, and electricity.

You have a few minutes and are taking the car, what else do you take with you?

  • Warm clothes
  • Food and drinks
  • Blankets
  • Hygienic products (toilet paper…)
  • Candles and matches
  • First-aid kit
  • Flashlight

Help others: let others catch a ride with you if there is space.

You have plenty of time, what else can you do?

  • Wear (especially in winter) warm, water resistant clothes and strong shoes.
  • Secure important products in safe spaces.

Stay informed about the incident. This includes saving relevant numbers and websites.
